I can relate with anyone who gets hungry in the wee hours of the morning. So I’ve put together a top ten list of my fave restaurants for late night dining.

Superbowl's (35 Goulburn St & 41 Dixon St, Sydney) menu caters for all your typical Chinatown cravings up til 2am every day. Feel like a midnight splurge? Try the delicate peking duck. Or if you're feeling peckish, I'd recommend sharing a pork and preserved egg congee (with deep-fried bread sticks of course), stir-fried pipis in a spicy XO sauce and one of the best salt and pepper prawns. Definitely give the noodles a miss though!

Seoul Ria (Level 2, 605-609 Cnr of George and Goulburn St, Haymarket) beats Superbowl by an hour, opening until 3am daily. This is the place to be for all-things Korean. Their kim-chi pancakes are scrumptious but be prepare to queue up if you're planning on dining here during normal eating hours.

Pancakes On The Rocks (4 Hickson Rd, The Rocks)... you can't ask for more from a place that offers breakfast 24 hours a day.

Hey Hey Kebabs (Parramatta Rd, Auburn) defies the common kebab and pizza joint by offering sandwich pressed kebabs and crispy fried chips which are seasoned generously with chicken salt, leaving you feeling moreish at 4am. The friendly service and odd jokes makes this place a winner with inner-westies.

Harry's Cafe De Wheels (Cowper Wharf Rd, Woolloomooloo) is the legendary late night eatery that has been serving up pies, peas and mash for decades. Harry's operates til 2am Monday - Thursdays, til 1.30am on Sunday and 4am on Fridays and Saturdays.

Mamak (15 Goulburn St, Sydney) makes the local Malaysians feel at home. They serve nasi lemak, roti kaya, cendol & ice kacang all day, right through to 3am.

City Extra (E4, Circular Quay & 301 Church St, Parramatta) is a commercial-type cafe covering a little bit of every cuisine, 24 hours.

Guzman y Gomez (Bayswater Rd Cnr of Pennys Ln, Kings Cross) makes it possible for you to munch on authentic Mexican quesadillas, tacos and burritos until 10pm Sunday - Thursdays and 2am on Friday & Saturday.

BBQ King (18-20 Goulburn St, Sydney) do great Chinese dishes but are a tad pricey. Good thing they're open til 2am daily 'coz where else would you get such crispy glazed BBQ meat cuts this late?

Star City's Trophies Foodcourt opens until 3am on Sunday to Thursday and 6am Friday & Saturday. They're a bit like an international food court. Cheap, tasty and umm, fast.

"Can I get a doner kebab with extra mushrooms, lettuce, tomatoes, onion, hommus... oh, and just a little bit of the meat, because I am a vegetarian."

I stared at him in shock.

As the meat was getting sliced he was pedantic in ensuring there was only a few thin slices of the beef. But surely that is not what pure vegetarians stand for?

Dictionary.com defines vegetarian as -
A person who does not eat or does not believe in eating meat, fish, fowl, or, in some cases, any food derived from animals, as eggs or cheese, but subsists on vegetables, fruits, nuts, grain, etc.

But after extensive research, I found that according to the Vegetarian Network in Victoria, he is a 'Semi' or 'Demi' Vegetarian or Flexitarian.
I'm not sure there are many restaurants out there with a Facebook page of more than 700 fans. Chinese Noodle Restaurant is a cheap and cheery place, popular with students, grads and just about everyone else... and has 719 fans & counting!

Over the years, Chinese Noodle Restaurant has fine-tuned its process to meet its peak hour demands such that by the time a table is available for you, the order you had placed outside is served almost immediately. The service is as quick as fast food and rather quirky. Cans of soft drinks are stored in eskies and like most Northern Chinese and Uighur restaurants, there are grape vines hanging from the ceiling and wall tapestries on all sides.

At Chinese Noodle Restaurant, there's even a tiny squared window for customers to view the kneading, whacking and stretching of handmade noodles.

One of my favourite dishes here, is the eggplant special. Chunky pieces of eggplant are fried and coated in a light crisp glaze... thankfully, they have never been overbearingly soaked in oil.

Fried eggplant special

I was in a classic kind of mood, so we also order these steamed pork and chive dumplings which are scrumptious with a dash of chilli and vinegar. The serving size was plentiful with a 12 serve only costing us $8.50. Other variations include egg & chives, pork & Chinese cabbage, pork & seafood, lamb & celery, lamb & onion and lamb & carrot. The dumplings can also be boiled or tossed in a light pan-fry.

Steamed pork and chive dumplings

These pan-fried mini pork buns were piping hot and so filling! The crunchy base was addictive so I found myself finishing off more than I should have! But I think I'd still prefer the crab filling from Shanghai Night / New Shanghai in Ashfield.

Pan-fried mini pork buns

Today, the signature Xinjiang handmade noodle stir-fry was heavier than usual but the combination of Chinese cabbage, tomatoes and capsicum provided relief.

Hand-made noodles with Xinjiang stir-fry

Nothing beats a tasty, authentic and highly addictive midweek dinner at Chinese Noodle Restaurant.

Oh, the food was fabulous, I'll definitely be back.

How often have you said those words after having a satisfying meal? Well, I've committed that crime too many times. Sometimes I'd go back for that one specific thing they left me craving, other times it'd be to see a cute waiter (ha!). There's something unique about all my favourite restaurants, and the reason I love Rise, is because of their genuineness, quirky service and innovation. Plus, for their 3 year anniversary, there's even a special Omakase degustation running between 17th - 22nd June for almost half price.

So naturally, I went on the first available day, booking the 8pm session in advance... knowing that it'd be another long evening in the office. No one likes timed seatings, but hey, from a restaurant owner's point of view, it's basically doubling the revenue prospects of each table! And at $36 per person, I'm not complaining.

I've been down with the flu for a couple of days, so it was sparkling water for me, and this luscious lychee cocktail for Zen.

lychee caipiroska

The first dish was produced and brought out in masses. Behind the sushi bar, I admired the quick production line. There were boxes of washed and perfectly trimmed witlof leaves and more. The tuna tartare is a staple item on the Rise menu, regularly making an appearance in the seasonal plate. It was nice to see it used as the main entree ingredient. I also couldn't get enough of the wasabi flavoured guacamole.

Tuna tartare, guacamole and witlof salad

I think Rise had discovered the secret to making the best clear soup stock and I'm so glad they've kept using it. The soup was warm, cleansing and delicious. Somewhere amongst the dumpling-looking calamari tortellini, rocket and cherry tomatoes were bits of kaffir lime leaves -so fragrant they are!

clear broth with calamari tortellini

When the assorted sashimi platter was served, I understood why we weren't forking out the usual $60. To my shock, they had reduced the 4 servings of fresh sashimi to 2. See my previous posts here and here as proof. Nonetheless, the salmon and kingfish was fantastic. Its texture was so delicate and the flavours... mmmm.... the flavours enhanced every morsel in the shot glass.

Assorted today's fresh market sashimi of salmon, kingfish and oyster

The seasonal plate was good but not great. I didn't like how the wonton cup had been fried so early that it lost its crunchiness.

Steamed baby octopus with ume plum vinaigrette, grilled eel rice paper rolls, duck and bamboo shoot with hoisin sauce in wonton cup

Spiced prawn, mung bean noodle and yoghurt sauce... I'm so sure this was inspired by the Vietnamese prawn biscuit...

The main dish was chicken. That's right, plain joe... But wait, there was a twist... the lemongrass scented coconut cream worked wonders for this otherwise boring dish.

Braised chicken, potato croquettes and coconut cream sauce

And lastly... the pannacotta, tapioca rice pudding looked like a 3 year old's wacky Hulk experiment but tasted of something familiar to fine dining. It was the combination you wish you had thought of. Yum!

I don't know what it is, but there's something good they're doing right. It seemed like the general consensus around the dining floor was that most had dined at Rise several times before.

Happy 3 year anniversary, Rise!

As I'm making my way to Shanghai Night (confusingly, the dumpling / noodle house next door), a woman fiercely slides open the door of New Shanghai and beckons us to sit down.

The menu was practically identical to its rival except this place was cleaner, brighter and dare I say better?

Replacing the torn fluoro menu posters were LCD TV's... and the corner table and chair was transformed into a modern open kitchen. Throughout the night, I watched as the cook effortlessly kneaded the dough and wrapped trays after trays of dumplings and buns.

These are my absolute favourite. They're steamed mini pork buns, which are also known as 'xiao long bao'. I love how they're steamed to perfection... the first bite always lets out a squirt of steam and soup which is ofcourse full in pork, ginger and soy flavour. They were delish!

Soon after, these uber crispy dumplings arrive. They're exactly what we wanted. Piping hot pastry with tender juicy morsels of pork mince and coriander inside.

pan-fried pork and coriander dumplings

The Shanghai-style spicy noodle soup with bamboo, pork and beancurd was good too. Although I still preferred the handmade noodles at Northern Noodle House in Haymarket.

The bill came to $25. A bargain for 2 full bellies!

When in search of a great restaurant in an unknown territory, I'd often flip through the Gourmet Traveller restaurant guide. In no time, I was deciding between Restaurant Two (two out of three stars, ranked 49th in Australia and 3rd in Brisbane) and E'cco (two stars, ranked 37th in Australia and 1st in Brisbane).

The choice was easy... and E'cco did not disappoint.

Once seated, I felt an immediate warmth and ease. The staff were adorably dressed in blue and white stripped butcher aprons and buzzed in and out of the open kitchen. The restaurant's bare timber tables and clean cut glass panels were reminiscent of the former tea warehouse... glowing and lively. Soon, we were offered to choose a slice of bread from a rather huge basket. There was sourdough of all sorts... including this gorgeous olive blend, pictured below.

Zen opted for the seared prawns as an entree which were juicy and plump and were served with a fool-proof combination of potatoes and avocado. There was an unique twist with fennel, watercress and saffron.

Seared prawns, sauteed potatoes, fennel, watercress, avocado, saffron and vanilla beurre blanc

My entree left me speechless. The grilled quail was so tender and flavoursome... the blue cheese souffle was aromatically delicate and the salad of pear, hazelnut and truffle honey was amazing. The three elements together formed one of the tastiest entrees ever! I might have even preferred double the servings as a main!

Grilled quail, blue cheese souffle, pear, hazelnut and truffle honey

Wagyu flank steak, paris mash broccolini, king mushrooms and morel sauce

For main course, Zen had the wagyu which looked ever so hearty and delicious. I naturally selected the pork belly which was unusually sliced -although thankfully, the crackling still remained crisp on each piece. I loved the addition of pomegranate seeds which I believe is an ingredient not used often enough. It proved to be an impressive adaptation of the pub pork roast with apple sauce.

Roast pork belly, caramelised pear puree, potato fondant, chard and pomegranate jus

I also couldn't go without a side order of these golden crunchy chips and aioli...

Side order of chips and aioli

Affogato al caffe, Frangelico and biscotti

Lastly... dessert. There was a generous shot of Frangelico in the affogato and I learnt that lavender was edible and a fabulous mix with white chocolate... although the pastry was thin and unlike those at Bourke Street Bakery, of which I am addicted to. But overall, I thought E'cco was great! A quality, genuine, no-bullshit type of bistro.

I've made my own baklava at home plenty of times. While it's fun mixing and matching different nuts, syrup to pastry ratio and wacky shapes, nothing beats walking into a baklava pastry store. The huge display here offers more varieties of baklava than you can imagine.

Here's what I ended up with:

The long ones in the back-right are lady's fingers cashew baklava... these are crispy, buttery and not overly loaded in syrup. Splendid. The round disc of pastry with cream has been an all time favourite of mine... the soft fluffy cream balances out the sweetness so well. Ah, and my second most loved baklava would have to be the king's crown of long kounafa pastry which resembles a bird's nest full of whole pistachios. It's pure heaven.
