Because I'm in Malaysia this Easter break (taking advantage of AirAsia X's cheap $99 airfares), I thought it'd be nice to share my latest fave Malaysian eat back home in Sydney...

New-ish to George Street, is Petaling Street: Malaysian Hawker Food. It is the 4th of it's kind, with the other restaurants stemming from Melbourne.

I've had the opportunity of dining here many times since its opening as my office is just down the road. The menu is a bit of a hit and miss but the 'hits' are bloody brilliant. So here are my recommended dishes if you feel like a taste of Kuala Lumpur --

Petaling Street Malaysian Hawker Food in Sydney - Hainanese chicken rice

The Hainanese chicken rice really hits the spot. Not only is it presented beautifully but every element is simply delicious. The chicken is tender and juicy and the skin has a silky soft finish with a remarkable sheen. Most importantly, the chicken pieces are all uniformly chopped, and the rice and broth are both sumptuously flavoursome. The sauces are well balanced too.

Petaling Street Malaysian Hawker Food in Sydney - CKT char kway teow

It's hard to find a good CKT (char kway teow) that is smoky with lots of 'wok heat' and one that includes all the right ingredients in the right ratio. The deep-fried pork lard croutons in this seal the deal for me!

Petaling Street Malaysian Hawker Food in Sydney - bah kut teh

The bah kut teh is pretty decent too. Pork ribs, pork belly and a few offal bits and bobs are served in a fragrant herbal broth. The garlic dipping sauce is absolutely lethal but so delectable!

Petaling Street Malaysian Hawker Food in Sydney - chicken curry laksa

And the dish I've probably had the most thus far, is the chicken curry laksa. It's a mix of vermicelli with Hokkien egg noodles, chicken, fried tofu puffs, bean sprouts, and even comes complete with cockles! The soup could be a little spicier and thicker but other than that, it's as good as what you'd find in Malaysia!
