Golden Century is one of the few Chinese restaurants in Sydney which has been awarded the one chef's hat. So I felt quite embarrassed when I realised I had never dined there! My sister had raved on about how good the food and service was and it was even the chosen restaurant for her first dinner with the hubby after the wedding! The opportunity recently came to celebrate my Mum's birthday so we decided to spoil her (and ourselves) with some impeccably good Chinese food.

We start with an all round favourite, san choy bow ($9 for two). Cold crisp trimmed lettuce cups are loaded with a delicious mixture of bamboo shoots, water chestnuts, mince meat, shallots and mushrooms. A little fiddly to eat but it is faultless in taste.

My sister highly recommends the Chinese deluxe soup, as one of the best soups she's ever had... I can't help but gasp at the price. It is $23 per person for a small bowl and features a mix of oriental delicacies such as abalone, sea cucumber, shark fin and fish maw. Call it the Chinese version of bouillabaisse if you like.

The flavour of the broth is divine. It is similar to the shark fin soup served at Chinese New Year and weddings and is also paired with red vinegar for added tartness and sweetness.

They really could have just substituted half the ingredients and I wouldn't have been able to pick it up. It's a luxury to some, but to me, it's just all over-priced texture. With a bowl each for seven of us, the soup alone cost $154! Ouch.

Onto the dishes, we have the seafood and bean curd hot pot ($32) - a juicy combination of prawns, octopus, carrot, Chinese cabbage, scallops, bean curd and fish, the cod fillet sauteed with vegetables ($25) served with oyster sauce. I love the firm flaky texture of the cod.

Golden Century Seafood Restaurant - Chinese - two vegetables with crab meat

We also have the two vegetables with crab meat ($24.80) which is broccoli and snow peas coated in a thick gooey crab meat and egg sauce - light and flavourful.

The Szechuan beef ($21) is a lot milder than anticipated. The beef itself is tender and succulent, paired beautifully with perfectly cooked zucchini and bound together by a luscious sauce with a hint of Szechuan peppercorns.

Then we have the deep fried duck with plum sauce ($23) which disappears in a flash. So crunchy, so tasty, so good.

Golden Century Seafood Restaurant - Chinese - complimentary sweets

We finish with complimentary sweets and fruit and I vow to return whenever I next crave good Cantonese food. It is all slightly pricey (tea was $1.50 per person!) but you definitely get what you pay for.

I remember coming here for weddings with my parents when I was young but havn't really ventured in on my own accord, I guess I might have to try it out for myself sometime ;) The soup is might expensive! I'd be expecting gold threads in there or something =D

Hi Jen! I love Golden Century! They've been there forever and they're open 'til 2 in the morning... perfect for after drinks munchies! Oh, I never tried the San Choy Bow. Whenever we go there we have Peking Duck and twice we had a Giant Crab cooked 3 ways. I think Duck and Seafood are Golden Century's forte. :)

I love the seafood hotpots here! I haven't been for years but I find their non-seafood dishes disappointingly average. But their seafood is delicious.

ohhh this is making me hungry...i havent been there for ages...it's where my family used to gather as well..
gee over $150 for soup?! crazzyy! i'm not a fan of shark fin soup at all...haha

I have been here a few times, but they have always been at the end of a big night, so everything tasted good! That duck looks delicious though, will def order that next time I am back.
