For some time now, I’ve been keen to add more meaning to the loosely used term ‘top Australian food blog’. The growth in the number of people photographing, eating then blogging has been remarkable, but how does one accurately measure this? While audience numbers may be a quick method, I believe there’s more to it.
The system I’ve used references (average of) both Technorati and Google. Technorati’s authority score is based on the links and relationships to other online articles in the last six months which ensures the blog is liked, linked and not outdated. To another extent, Google’s pagerank highlights those blogs who have contributed more towards important and relevant content. Unfortunately, this means some Aussie food blogs have slipped off the list because of a poor SEO understanding and/or because they have recently changed domain names.
Anyway, we all love top10, top 20 lists, so here I present you the top 30 Australia food blogs. Perhaps this will soon grow into a top50 or a top100 list, but in the meantime, congratulations to those who have made it.

If you think I’ve left a blog out, please leave a comment below and I’ll assess it in the next list update.
I’ve also kept some expats on the list. What are your thoughts? Should the traitors be dropped?

Nice work. How long did this take you?!
So what strategies do you suggest to improve our rankings?
Great list. It al takes a lot of time. I've been meaning to update the number of blogs here but it's over 200. maybe I'll have time soon with the downturn.
Thanks for taking the time to do this Jen! I admit I'm not that au fait with SEO. Christie from Fig & Cherry is an SEO expert-par excellence!
Your coming soon tool is good too. Nice list of restaurants!
Hey Jen,
You're so cute! Thanks for doing this and I'm stoked to feature, yay :P
Christie x
ps. Lorraine, thanks for the promo honey!
Woohoo! Scraped in at 29 lol. Love the list, some great blogs I didn't know about here.
Thanks for your efforts - exciting to find a few new reads and tweeters for me there.
Some suggestions if you do an update:
The Last Appetite Phil Lees
Thus Bakes Zarathustra Rachael Kendrick
Nourish Me Lucy Dodds
As for expats, won't they come and go to and from Australia over time? If so, excluding them might make more work for you.
Hi Jen
If I may I'd like to bring to your attention an excellent food and lifestyle blog Gourmet Worrier
Ms.Gourmet is new on the scene but developing quite a following.
Cheers
Huxley
Very clever list! Gives a fresh perspective on blog popularity and the value of unique content vs clever strategic marketing.
Congratz to all who are on it ^^! whhhheeee celebration?!
Well, if nothing else these lists are a great way to get some traffic Jen :) Nothing a blogger loves than seeing their name on a Top list somewhere...
I had a system running a while back that generated the listing via technorati API calls, but kind of let it fall by the wayside when I couldn't rig it so I came in number 1 :)
I also don't think it's possible to statistically rank in a way that reflects a sites true level of influence, but well done for having a go.
Thanks for this list. Really great to discover some blogs I didn't know.
ps. It should be Kitchen Wench, not Wrench, unless she's recently taken up plumbing :) and I didn't realise/know that She Who Eats was Aussie?
And I agree with Matt, it's very hard to quantify influence but I like how you've used Google rankings to add an extra dimension.
hey great work dude! that mustve taken quite a while to figure out! heh heh if you drop the expats we move up on the list...
It's a surprise and an honour to make it to the list.
Though I'd expect Nourish Me to be there too, have you checked out her stats since migrating to a typepad (nourish-me.typepad.com)?
Nice work Jen, good to see the community active and thriving!
Hey Jen, so pissed at not making it to your list. I mean, there is no valid reason for this feeling, especially considering how neglected my food blog has been for the last few months or that the recipes I have on my standard blog get far more Google hits, but now I have a goal. A focus. To get onto that god damn list. Not that I'm competitive at all. Oh no. Not me.
that's a great list. hope to check them all out. how do you work out scores?
s :-)
That's a great list - thanks for putting it together! I've got a lot of reading and subscribing to do now..
amateur me to see so many blogs that i never heard of. must eat more.
No
Stone Soup ? Really?
A few newbies for me, too.
(Thanks Zoe and AOF! - lovely laydees)
i'm suprised grabyourfork is listed @ #5. i thought it'd be much higher. its always the first food blog i go to! will be checking out the rest of that list.
i like the upcoming restaurants feat as well. its like those tv shows where the restaurant is looking out for the food critic to come and rate them. and it provides a warning to them =P
pagerank looks at the links as well - the number of websites linking back to your website. the more links you have, the more authoritative your blog is and the higher the ranking.
Hey Jen
no credit for being the idea mojo ;)
Hey Helen, haha, thanks, it took several hours! Also thanks for pointing out the typo w/ Kitchen Wench... haha, midnight blogging is sometimes not a good idea. And crapola, I think you are right re: She Who Eats! I'll update this in next month's round up. Oppsy again and thanks for being so observant!
Reemski, I love your blog as it is. I hope this doesn't encourage anyone to change the way they blog just to get into the list because its fundamentally all about passion and not numbers. With that said, raising the profile of your blog through networking, SEO considerations and regular posts will help :-)
Hi Edward, a list of the top 200? Days it will take.
Hey Lorraine, hehe, thanks! I think you've been doing great regardless! Congrats again on getting the Obama pizza on SMH and on being one of the Well Fed Network’s Best Food Blog finalists.
Hey Christie, thanks hun! I love your work. Your breakfast each morning inspires me... hehe...
Hi Minh! Haha, congrats on making the list with a relatively new food blog! Yum.
Hi Zoe & Huxley, thanks for that! I always love new blogs to follow. I'll add these to my list and will do another round up next month. I think that is as often as I can keep this up.
Thanks Forager! :-)
Hey FFichiban, we shall keep an eye out for your blog too once the domain name change wears off.
Hi barbara, it looks like i'm discovering new blogs too! Yay!
Hey chocolatesuze... good point... LOL! I may as well drop them... hmmm...
Hi another outspoken female, I haven't read Nourish Me before. Thanks for the tip.
Thanks Howard. Congrats on making the list dude :)
Hi Kim, I will take your blog into consideration when I do next month's list. Keep up the awesome work!
Hi Simon, it's an average of the Technorati Authority and Google Pagerank. It looks like I've quite a few blogs out. My bad! Next month's will be bigger and better.
Hi Ross Hill, my pleasure, it was an interesting task compiling the list!
Hey Billy, I love your blog! Keep up the top work ;-)
Hi Lucy, bummerama, thanks for introducing me to Stone Soup.
Hi inspiredworlds, Helen's grabyourfork has definitely inspired lots of the other food blogs (including mine) on the list. I think there are plenty of new ones sneaking in as well. I love your idea about warning restaurants, but because I have revealed my identity on this site, I'm afraid to be turned away! The coming soon panel is only a list of where I have eaten recently but have yet to post about it. It's my way of saying sorry for the delay. Ha! ;-)
Thanks Ash... haha ;-)
Great list but isn't it suppose to be an Aussie list? Expats aside, what is the journal of the girl how loves to cook doing there? Studying in our great land and then returning overseas does not make you an expat.
And real expats should be exluded as they are not really promoting Aussie restaurants, produce or events.
I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don't know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.

Hey Jen! Good roundup, I have been reading most of them for a while now. My blog is Australia, Sydney based too. It is almost 5 years old but is gathering steam this year since I started blogging full-time. I do food-blogger and chef interviews on there too!
Very cool list.
I would like to add mine to your list one day if it makes it up there :)

I have recently come across your blog. Loving it!! I have been cooking since I was a kid (that was a while ago) and have been running my own small catering business for the past 6 or so years. Have just recently started a blog (after much pressure from family and friends) ... thought you might want to take a look. Would love your feedback. Jill
its a really sweet blog about a young Melbournian woman who loves to bake for the man she loves. kind of a blog about how to catch or keep a guy by tending to his sweet tooth..
Clever when her boyfriend rates all her food.

Being new to the world of food blogging I can only hope my food photgraphy skills and blog, aimed at inspiring others to experiment with new foods and techniques, will continue to improve. I can only hope to make it onto your list in the future! http://apassionforfood-susy.blogspot.com/

This is an old list. The more recent one is here, where Sarah-Cooks was added. Please note I am in the process of updating the algorithm for this list...
