The first time I heard about stone-grilling, I was rather turned off... I had pictured a succulent piece of steak on an ordinary slab of rock. How primitive and unhygienic! Stone-grilling is actually an ancient method of cooking, adopted from the Egyptians and Vikings. The stone is heated at 400 degrees celsius, and allows you to quickly seal in all flavours. It provides a standard cooking time of up to 1 hour...

My verdict? I loved stone-grilling! Its great being able to eat and cook at my own pace... You can have it as rare or as well-done as you like! My favourties of the sauces would probably have been the ponzu which is made of soy sauce, lemon juice and rice wine vinegar... and the creamy sesame and tofu sauce. MmM! The staff at Ishiya were also very friendly and informative :-)

excuse me while i wipe all the drool from my keyboard!

that stone grill thing looks awesome! must remember to add it to my list of restaurants to visit when i go back to melbourne!

I'm surprised that this is the only web "review" I can find for this place.

I went a few months ago and have been craving for it since. I just loved how tender the meat was and the fact that I could have it as rare as I liked!

Only gripe is that the dipping sauces come in too small portions. I'll definitely be back there on my next visit to Melb.

Hey Riss & Willy - Yup, it sure was yummy! Wonder if there's a similar place in Sydney...

I went to Ishiya quite by chance. I was considering going to Ginza for the teppanyaki but my wife wanted a Bento meal so we decided on Ishiya.

I will start of by saying that the porterhouse that I ordered was excellent. Not only was the meat so tender and juicy but the juices ooozing out as you cut the meat on the stone grill intensified the flavour. Staff there were polite, patient and very hospitable particularly given we had two young kids with us.

The many options Ishiya had on the menu were awesome to say the least. We tried the gyoza along with some sashimi and a lovely clam soup that is hard to describe with words.

Excellent food and service that I can't recommend enough.

Hi rustynail, glad to hear that you also enjoyed Ishiya! There's so much to try... must go for the seafood combo next!

This the the best japanese restaurant i have been for ages. The sevice is great and every thing is beyound my expectation. You must try the Stonegrill.

Hi Jenny, you're right... the stonegrill was fabulous!

Went down to Ishiya again today. The tenderloin steak was brilliant. I also loved the sashimi, which was felt and tasted fresher than your regular run-of-the-mill japanese cafe/restaurant. Service was great too. I will definitely go back there again.

Went there for lunch with the boys today. Had to run off as soon as I finished my meal though. One of the people I went with is a chef and enjoyed it heaps even though he cooks steak every day.

RAW MEATTT YEHH.....i went with my frend jason cheung and we spent 310 on the bill between two people.
when i got home i vomit on the floor nelon style.

I felt Ishiya was one of the worst experiences I've had at a restuarant. The food is OK but the owner/managers are very rude where it makes you sick in your stomach. We were refused a glass of water from the tap and they said we must buy a bottle, they rolled their eyes at us when we asked about items on the menu and furthermore the meal you receive is actually different from the pictures in the menu (you get a lot less). Even if they served the best food in Melbourne, I would not go back because of the service we got, which was appalling.

It’s nice to finally locate a web site where the blogger is very knowledgable.
